As avid motorcyclists, this normally means motorcycle safety and with summertime upon us, it’s a good time to remember to watch out for motorcycles. They are fast, maneuverable and sometimes hard to see.

However, for this blog article we wanted to remind everyone about the bikes they grew up riding: bicycles. A bicyclist is even less protected than a motorcycle rider and even harder to see.

Like a motorcycle, one of the most important pieces of gear a bicyclist can have is a helmet. Studies show that wearing a helmet can reduce head injuries by up to 45! Sadly, those same studies also show that less than half of the children under age 14 wear a helmet on a consistent basis.

Our best advise is to lead by example. Take your children riding on their bikes. Make sure YOU are wearing a helmet if you expect your children to, and begin teaching your children the rules of the road. Children under 10 should probably stick to the sidewalks, but it’s never to early to start teaching your children the rules of the road, especially if you live in a more rural area without sidewalks.
